ARE YOU INTERESTED IN COMMUNITY FUNDRAISING?

The aim of Go Orange Day for Muscular Dystrophy Day across Tasmania is to raise awareness and understanding of MD and neuromuscular conditions to optimise people’s health and wellbeing. It’s also a great way to raise funds for Muscular Dystrophy Tasmania as it assists Tasmanians affected by neuromuscular conditions.

Muscular dystrophy is a neuromuscular, genetic disorder which results in the progressive deterioration of muscle strength and function. The most common form in childhood is Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, which can see a young boy using a manual wheelchair by the age of 8, and being dependent on an electric one by his early teens. Life expectancy for this condition is usually only until early adulthood.

There are many other types of neuromuscular conditions, affecting people of all ages. While some forms of muscular dystrophy occur in babies or children, some others appear in late adolescence or adulthood. It is estimated that there are more than 40,000 people in Australia who have some form of neuromuscular disease, and 1,000 people in Tasmania live with a neuromuscular condition.

MDT continues to fundraise for the neuromuscular community, and your fundraising helps people like 14-year-old Declyn who lives with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. A new wheelchair-accessible vehicle donated by fundraisers like you is going to make a huge difference in his life from 2024. Now the whole family can drive out together to go to activities he’s interested in, such as picnics and visiting family and friends.

Community Fund Raising Ideas

If you are interested in fundraising for MDT towards a hydrotherapy pool in Launceston in the Go Orange for MD 2024 campaign here are some community themed fundraising ideas you may like to try.
1
Crafting session
Using orange yarn, wool, felt, thread, and material you can create mini pumpkins for Halloween, or oranges for a fruit bowl, or orange aprons for your kitchen, or embroider pretty marigolds on cushions, or make orange dog sweaters.

Or you may want to knit for an orange yarn bombing spree? (You’d need to talk to your local Council for that, so please get in touch with the MDT office).
2
Cocktail party
Picture yourself enjoying mimosas with your friends, indulging in nasturtium decorated savoury tarts with salmon roe, pumpkin dip and carrot sticks, in your lounge room decorated with a beautiful vase of orange flowers. Perhaps you’ll all dress with an accent of orange too? And have orange lighting?

Or make other cocktails like Love Spell, with dark rum, orange liqueur and lemon juice? Or an Aperol spritzer? Or a mocktail of orange, grapefruit and soda
3
Dinner party
Invite your friends around for a special meal, themed around the colour orange. Invite your guests to wear orange. Your starter may be pumpkin tarts on a bed of salad, followed by a main of orange roughy or butter chicken curry, with a dessert of orange meringue pie!

Orange candles on the table, orange napkins, and mandarins and tangelos in your fruit bowl will really lift the feel of the event.
4
Chocolate party/Kids party.
Make orange-coloured chocolates with white chocolate and food colouring for a fun chocolate fountain or use moulds to make bite-sized orange chocolates.

We can provide you with a dozen orange balloons and specially designed bunting to dress up your room.
5
A walk in the park
Invite friends and family of all ages and abilities to a walk in your local park, wearing an orange item (we have orange caps for sale on our webpage) and finish off with a picnic in the park with freshly sliced oranges and peaches, red cheddar sandwiches, Cheetos or Doritos and orange gummy worms and snakes!! You might take your dog too!
6
A quiz
Use our specially designed quiz based on the colour orange for a school class activity.

Or an “Orange chance game” that gives you an odds-on chance to pick the right image.
7
Your ideas?
Of course, there are many more ideas you could come up with and we hope you can have lots of fun with it, all in aid of a great cause.

GO ORANGE AT SCHOOL

How about getting your friends together during Go Orange Week at school? Raise some money to help families in Tasmania who have someone with a neuromuscular disorder like muscular dystrophy. These families really need our support!

You can do lots of fun things like having a yummy morning tea, playing games together, or even having a cool lunch event. And guess what? Every single dollar you raise will help MDT buy a hydrotherapy pool in Launceston. This pool helps people with neuromuscular disorders get the vital exercise they need.

So, make your school day extra fun while helping others. You can get together with friends, teachers, and everyone at school to come up with awesome ideas to raise money. Even if you can only give a little bit, it will still make a big difference.
